River Street
HAAS Landscape Architects, in collaboration with
Gannett Fleming, Inc., was retained to provide alignment reviews, planting, and
lighting design as part of the 1.4 mile River Street reconstruction project.
The corridor offers panoramic views of the Susquehanna River and a recreational
resource used by visitors and residents of Towanda. Seasonal events include
Towanda's Riverfest, Susquehanna Sojourn, and a weekly Farmer's Market. Native
plants were selected based on their sustainable characteristics and ornamental
qualities during all seasons. The River Street extension and improvements were
conceived in a feasibility study prepared in 1989 by Mr. Haas. The vision took
years of planning to determine the final alignment to accommodate a two-lane
roadway with bicycle lanes, private railroad, and 8' paved pedestrian trail.
River Street now offers a North-South alternative to traffic which only had
Towanda's busy Main Street to link workers with major industry north of the
Borough. The new road and trail begins in downtown and ends at the
Osram/Sylvania and Dupont plants. |
