Rehabilitation of Bevier Street Bridge/Otsiningo Park Entry
The redesign of the Otsiningo Park entrance is a functional and aesthetic enhancement of this County bridge reconstruction to improve the movement of vehicles and pedestrians in and out of the park. A prominent stone gateway and sign incorporate a contextual Native American theme that reflects the history of the site and the name “Otsiningo”. Native bluestone is used as a sustainable material to veneer the 5-foot square piers. The blue mosaic tiles represent the two rivers, the Susquehanna and the Chenango, merging in the City of Binghamton. The leaf of the Sycamore and the colors red and yellow are found in Native American art. Otsiningo was referred to as “The Southern Door” of the symbolic Iroquois longhouse which was located across central New York. The arched sign, adorned with the letters “Otsiningo Park”, mimics the form of the longhouses that once occupied this site. In cooperation with the VFW, a granite “All Wars” Memorial, including the American flag, honoring all the military services, was designed to be located at the east end of the bridge. The pavement form is a “V” wedge symbolic of warfare. Project was a collaboration with Delta Engineering, Binghamton, NY. |
