Chemung River Trail
Development of a Comprehensive Master Plan for 20 miles of Chemung River corridor funded through a grant from the New York State Quality Communities Program. The vision adopted by the River Council is to protect and improve the riverfront environment, make it a more accessible recreation resource for residents and visitors, unify river communities, and encourage economic development.
This plan and its phased implementation strategies are based on a thorough inventory of existing conditions, cultural history, and public involvement. It provides a realistic vision of environmental stewardship and development of the river as an economic and recreational asset. The River Trail encompasses the City of Elmira, the 5 riverfront towns of Big Flats, Elmira, Southport, Ashland, and Chemung, and 20 miles of the Chemung River corridor. HLA managed the project in collaboration with Rick Manning Landscape Architect and Foor & Associates, Architects. The team worked closely with a Waterfront Advisory Committee. Implementation recommendations included visualizations of signature projects across the County. Further connections to other regional trail systems are also proposed.
